Paul Staley and Dan Ryan

Paul Staley, vice president, Operational Initiatives and Performance Improvement, Office of Labor Management Partnership

While his title is a mouthful, Paul is a very down-to-earth guy. He is intent on helping unit-based teams become the platform for how Kaiser Permanente delivers care. That means focusing on small changes that add up to huge improvements in service, clinical outcomes and cost reductions that keep KP affordable and make it the best place to work in health care.

Paul certainly thinks it is—he’s been at KP since 1991.Before his current role with UBTs, he held numerous operations positions in the Colorado region, including director of Chemical Dependency, director of Behavioral Health, senior director of Lab, Radiology, Eye Care and Facilities and management co-lead for the Labor Management Partnership. Paul holds a BA in education and an MA in counseling from the University of Colorado.

When he’s not on the road visiting UBTs, Paul likes to run, fly fish, hike, ski—both snow and water—and, most importantly, spend time with his family. And he still finds time to blog!

Dan Ryan, field director, Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions

Dan is very low key at first meeting. But don’t let that fool you. He has years of experience as a union organizer and advocate and is hardly unassuming when it comes to speaking up for frontline workers. Managers don’t seem to hold it against him, however, and like him anyway. He is deadly serious when it comes to working with unit-based teams around workplace innovation. Dan knows that the best ideas on improving quality and service and reducing waste come from the people who do the work every day.

Before taking the field director position, Dan was a national coordinator for the Union Coalition in Colorado. A long time member of United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Denver, he served for several years as the Kaiser Permanente representative for the members of UFCW Local 7. He has worked as a shop steward, organizer, organizing director and union representative.

When he’s not on the road visiting UBTs, Dan can be seen riding his purple Harley through the Rockies outside Denver.
